Chinese Man At Work Removing Bark From Logs Before Logs Used In Building Work

Picture of Chinese man using a hand tool to remove bark from very large log, or tree trunk, to prepare the log for building work.

Very large logs, stocked on the grounds of the Shaolin Temple, were having the bark removed by a Chinese man working with a hand tool. The removal of the bark from the logs with a hand tool might well be the way the bark from logs was removed, when the Temple Halls were built originally. No powered machines were available at that time, and no powered equipment was used on this present day, for removing the bark off the tree trunks.

There were many construction workers on the Temple site, but not many of the workers were making use of powered tools that would have been available for many of the jobs that had to be completed. When the logs had been stripped of their bark, the timber would be cut, shaped, and finished, ready for use in the building of the halls. Removing the bark from the logs was only the first stage of transforming the tree
trunks into suitable sections for further use. The timber from some of the tree trunks was used as pillars in the post and beam construction work, and some timber used for features, such as models of dragon heads, that would be positioned when roof building.

When looking at the logs of timber laid out in their spot of the construction site, it is almost impossible to visulise what some of the end results would look like, after removing the bark from the logs, and different pieces of the logs used for different purposes. From the larger pieces of timber came the pillars, beams and roof trusses, all fitting together by tongue and groove, like a jigsaw. Other pieces of timber were carved into more decorative pieces by Chinese workmen using small two-man bow saws, and then knives and chisels, probably using the same methods as used by their ancestors

*** Bark removal Cut logs used for the production of lumber or even log cabins generally have the bark removed, either just before cutting or for curing. Such logs and even trunks and branches found in their natural state of decay in forests, where the bark has fallen off, are said to be decorticated. A number of living organisms live in or on bark, including insects, fungi and other plants like mosses , algae and other vascular plants. Many of these organisms are pathogens or parasites but some also have symbiotic relationships. Src: Wikipedia.Org ***
