Domestic Duck Rummages Amongst Dumped Rubbish Near Sea At Three Sisters Bay

Picture of domestic duck colored mostly brown searching through small pile of rubbish dumped amongst trees.

Not far from the beach at Three Sisters Bay, where we had our lunch, there were some domestic ducks walking about searching for any scrap of food they could find. One of the ducks seemed to be very interested in rubbish dumped under the trees, but from what we could see the rubbish was mostly cigarette ends and plastic bags. Perhaps this domestic duck had spotted a morsel of food dumped by one of the restaurants, or had seen a grub or worm that had also been attracted by the rubbish.

Domestic ducks seem to be expert scavengers, and flocks of them are often seen walking on the country roads in China, being shepharded by a farmer, taking them to, or bringing them from, a rice paddy field after harvest. The ducks will soon find any
grain that has been dropped during the harvest, and no doubt feed on any grubs or worms that happen to be around.

The domestic ducks we used to keep at home were Aylesbury ducks, hatched from eggs, so the ducklings would tend to consider us as a parent, and follow us about whenever they were free to roam! As children we thought this following of ducks was a wonderful event, and were disappointed when the domestic ducks were taken to market or found their way onto our dinner table!

*** The overall body plan of ducks is elongated and broad, and the ducks are also relatively long-necked, albeit not as long-necked as the geese and swans. The body shape of diving ducks varies somewhat from this in being more rounded. The bill is usually broad and contains serrated lamellae which are particularly well defined in the filter-feeding species. In the case of some fishing species the bill is long and strongly serrated. The scaled legs are strong and well developed, and generally set far back on the body, more so in the highly aquatic species. The wings are very strong and are generally short and pointed, and the flight of ducks requires fast continuous strokes, requiring in turn strong wing muscles. Src:Wikipedia.Org ***
